Summary
The developer does not collect, transmit, or sell any of your data. Your food/macro data is either kept entirely on your device, or sent only to a destination you explicitly choose and control. The one exception is advertising: the free (Android) version shows ads served by Google AdMob, which collects your advertising ID to do so — see "Advertising" below. An optional subscription removes ads entirely.
What data the app handles, and where it goes
Standalone mode (default): all data — foods, combined foods, log entries, photos, your settings — is stored only in your device's local storage (IndexedDB/localStorage). Nothing leaves your device unless you use one of the optional features below. Uninstalling the app deletes this data.
Self-hosted server mode (opt-in, via Settings → Server connection): if you choose to connect the app to your own server, your data (foods, log entries, photos) is sent to and stored on that server, which you own and control. The developer has no access to it. The connection address and access key you enter are stored only on your device.
Barcode scanning: when you scan a barcode, the app first checks your own local/server data, then — if not found — looks it up against Open Food Facts' public product database (openfoodfacts.org), a nonprofit, crowd-sourced database. Only the barcode number is sent; no personal information.
Open Food Facts contribution (opt-in, via Settings → Open Food Facts account): if you choose to supply your own Open Food Facts account credentials, the app can submit new products/photos to Open Food Facts' public database on your behalf, under your own account. Your credentials are stored only on your device (standalone) or encrypted on your own server (self-hosted); the developer never sees them.
Nutrition label scanning: photos you take of nutrition labels are processed for text recognition entirely on-device (Google ML Kit, in the Android app) or in your browser (Tesseract.js, on the web app). Photos are never uploaded anywhere unless you explicitly use the Open Food Facts contribution feature above.
Backups: the app can export your data as a file via your device's normal share sheet, or (self-hosted mode only) push a backup to a Gitea/GitHub repository you configure yourself. Either way, the destination is entirely your choice.
Advertising (Android app, free tier only)
The Android app shows a small banner ad, served by Google AdMob, unless you have an active "remove ads" subscription. AdMob collects your device's advertising ID and uses it (along with standard mobile ad signals) to serve and measure ads, per Google's advertising and analytics policy. Before showing any ad, the app requests your consent via Google's User Messaging Platform where required (e.g. under GDPR); you can decline, in which case only non-personalized ads (or none) are shown depending on your region and choice.
This is the only third-party SDK in this app that collects any data. It is not enabled at all — no SDK is initialized, no ID is collected — once you subscribe to remove ads, and it never runs at all in Standalone mode's own data (foods/log/photos) or in the browser/web version of this app.
Payment (remove-ads subscription)
The optional "remove ads" subscription is billed entirely through Google Play's own billing system. The developer never receives or stores your payment details — Google handles all payment information directly, per Google Play's own policies. The app only learns whether the subscription is active, not any payment detail.
What the developer does NOT do
- No analytics, tracking, or crash-reporting SDKs.
- No advertising SDK of the developer's own — AdMob above is Google's, used only to display ads, and is entirely absent for ad-free subscribers.
- No user accounts held by the developer.
- No payment information ever reaches the developer.
- No data of any kind is collected, stored, or shared by the developer themselves.
Data deletion
- Standalone mode: uninstall the app, or use Settings to clear your data.
- Self-hosted server mode: delete your data on your own server (the app's restore/data-management features can help), or revoke the app's access key.
